For a change, theres a noteworthy political event today that doesnt involve raiding airplanes or beheadings or even bombings. Instead, its quite peaceful, but has the capability to shake up, even reshape, part of Europe. Scotland is voting today whether they will remain part of the United Kingdom or separate and become independent. Weve considered the UK, also known as Britain, a staunch ally for many years. The remaining part, should the UK separate, still will be; but a lot of international muscle will be lost should the vote be Yes. The UK has, famously, been more than youd expect a small island to be, but that simply cant last in a world where a few much larger nations contest for leadership. Militarily, Scotland is the home of Britains nuclear deterrent, and if Scotland goes independent, their intent is to remove the nukes. That will shake NATO. And what of finance? London has been a center of world financial activity; will that now change? Regardless of how this turns out today, life is going to change for the people in the UK, and for a lot of the rest of us.
