For a child born on the Fourth of July, when we celebrate the Declaration of the British colonies’ Independence from the crown, it is fitting that Tess Hamilton-Ward is related to someone who fought in the conflict. In fact, she is descended from two, and related to more. On her mother’s side, she is descended from Col. Orange Train, who entered the Revolution as an Ensign and was promoted, through service that needs to be researched some more, to his final rank. (His records are maintained in “Vermont Men in the Revolutionary War.”) On Tess’s father’s side, she is descended from William Huse, whose service is demonstrated because his widow, Rachel Brier Huse, was granted a military pension in 1846, when she was 87. She has more than a few cousins who fought, as well. Happy Birthday, Tess. Happy 4th of July.
