For a while early in the first half of the first decade of the 21st century I was a graduate student at Idaho State University (ISU). ISU had a facility that used dogs & cats from the local pound as objects for research. They would euthanize the animals once done with them. The gentleman who ran the animal holding facility at ISU had been there for decades himself and had overseen putting many, many animals down. When this dog came into the facility, he decided that he had to save this one, which was quite a remarkable thing in any event. Events conspired to bring me into the act and of course I could not walk away from her. She was scheduled to be put down the next day. I remember when Guido & the dog who became Pasha met for the first time. It was outdoors in mid-winter. It was a bitterly cold & blustery dark evening. Pasha wagged her tail enthusiastically. Guido growled threateningly. They made friends within minutes, which was good. I took possesson of Pasha (legally) and we all went home. Pasha was quite young, probably a year or so but hard to tell. A good friend of mine at the time helped me with the cost of a vet visit. The vet cut the price a bit for us. That same friend took Pasha to a few training sessions just to help get her under control. Amazing what humans can do when the heart speaks first. Pasha is old now. Probably around 12 years old, like Guido. She still stays active and with new (BIG) puppy Mina in the house she is a bit rejuvenated, though there is some arthritus and she doesnt quite have the endurance she once had. She lives for love. Gives it and takes it. Remarkable creature. So unlike so many humans. It reminds me of our committment to our animal friends. They give so much and really, if we think of it, demand so little. When humans misbehave, it is to the animals I run. Always have. Always will.
