For about 3 weeks during the summer of 1977, I had something in common with Bobby Fischer... I thought I was the greatest Chess player in the World. During Fall of my 4th grade year in Mrs. Donnis class during a rainy day I played against Mike Weaver and he beat me 2 straight games and I basically gave the game up. Mike was much better than I was and I learned a valuable lesson of getting over ones skis over their personal interpretation of how good they really are at a chosen game or sport. In the movie, Searching For Bobby Fischer we find a very smart boy who has no idea how good he is at this game hes just learned, Chess. Max Pomeranc is convincing as the young child chess prodigy who his gift his parents, Joe Mantegna and Joan Allen initially fear and then love. Ben Kingsley is along for the ride as his eventual teacher but its the interaction between young Josh and Laurence Fishburnes character of Vinnie, a street Chess hustler that makes this film #166 on my list of the 187 Best Movies That I Have Ever Seen. From 1993, Searching for Bobby Fischer is a great movie for you whether you love Chess or have no idea of how to play the game. It has universal appeal. Check it out. youtu.be/8khmNiamBxo
