For all its material advantages, the sedentary life has left us edgy, unfulfilled. Even after 400 generations in villages and cities, we haven’t forgotten. The open road still softly calls, like a nearly forgotten song of childhood. —Carl Sagan I THINK CARLS RIGHT ...WE ARE EDGY, BUT WE ARE MOVING FORWARD MORE THAN BACKWARDS .....400 generations is not a lot of time in evolutionary terms to expect change at such a deep level to be fully effected. In fact though, compare our resilience in the urban environment with that of say a lost Amazonian tribe and youll no doubt see how far we have come in terms of evolutionary change....weve adapted to our urban lives really quite well, in comparison. Firstly, an Amazonian would probably die quite quickly from the bacteria we live happily with...secondly, theyd fall apart from the stress of trying to acquire the virtual products we work to buy - high esteem, respect through consumption etc. Even African Americans and South American immigrants from agrarian societies have have trouble acquiring the attributes required for survival in consumerist societies.
