For all my Maryland friends. Especially those who have children - TopicsExpress

For all my Maryland friends. Especially those who have children just over the age of 18. Our legislators will be discussing the possible decriminalization of marijuana in legislative session today. I urge you to call and leave a message for your representative in favor of H.B. 0879. This bill does not legalize marijuana! It prevents the courts from imposing unreasonable and excessive punishments upon violators who are in possession of small amounts of marijuana. Many good kids make the simple mistake of being around it, sometimes unknowingly. If over the age of 18 and caught in a situation like this they will be arrested and jailed. The law currently carries a penalty of up to a year in jail for a first-time offender. Not to mention the fines that go with it. The incident will go on their record affecting their lives forever! A one time violation can result in probation for three years. Not to mention the complete removal of any scholarship funds which they may have acquired. If jailed, your children will be exposed to violent criminals and could potentially be harmed. Current laws provide harsh punishment and not treatment. Our laws are meant to protect our children. Not potentially ruin their lives. As a parent YOU should be allowed to address an issue like this with your child and seek proper help. Attempting to scare them with just say no rhetoric does not work! Its time we stop making criminals out of kids who make a simple mistake or who may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The same mistake our last three Presidents have all admitted to doing. Put your childs fate back in your hands in this situation. Stop letting the government impose unreasonable punishments so they can turn a dollar on your childs unfortunate mistake. Treatment is the best option. Call Now and ask to leave a message for your representative. 410 946 5400 Please support HB 0879
