For all of our new Friends on Facebook... In case you don’t know much about us, the Festival runs November 18-23 at various locations in Calgary. November 18-20 Films screen at the Globe Theatre, John Dutton Theatre and Stephen Leacock Theatre. November 20-23 screenings occur at the River Park Church Auditorium. We hope audiences watch a film, stay for the discussion, and visit with local non-government groups and fair trade vendors that will be onsite (screenings at the Globe Theatre will not have speakers). More detailed info at justicefilfestival.ca A Different Festival: Everything is FREE to the public. We come from a different perspective than some film festivals. Many festivals tend to be about film; the making of film and the artistry. We are not about that. We understand film is an important medium to convey a story. So for us, film is a wonderful method to convey issues and concerns. We offer a very different experience. The Program: Each year, the Program Committee previews and selects films for the Festival. The aim is to include the highest quality local & international documentary films based on timeliness, relevance, connection to local stories, and representing a broad range of world issues. We secure non-theatrical public performance rights to films that present topics relevant to threats to human dignity in the areas of gender and poverty, racial and ethnic disparities, war, health conditions, education, human rights, political freedoms, the environment, etc. The annual line-up normally includes a family film and a film that tells an important historical story. Conversation Leaders: Highlighting each screening are conversation leaders carefully selected for their expertise or experience with issues raised in each film. This provides audience members with a way to learn more about what they have just seen. Moderators: Moderators welcome questions, answers, and comments from the audience and conversation leaders. Meaningful conversation supports individuals to connect in new ways with themes, friends, or an audience member who inspired them. Even individuals who do not participate in the conversation are exposed to multiple perspectives. NGO Village: Local non-government groups and fair trade vendors are on site all weekend. We create close matches between the films we feature and participating organizations. These groups are on hand to contribute to the discussion and to provide resources. After each film, audiences can visit tables where they can learn, volunteer, donate, and advocate, if inspired to engage in a local and active way. We look forward to seeing you there!
