For all of you that were interested, here are the instructions for the outdoor cat shelters. You will need 18 gallon or bigger plastic tote, Styrofoam, hay, and some type of cutting tool such as a sharp knife or saw. First you want to cut a big enough hole for a cat to go through in the the side, near the bottom of the tote ( see pic). One tip that we got was to heat up the tote using a blow dryer and then can easily cut with a knife. Make a second hole on the opposite side but not directly across from the first to allow an escape route. Layer the bottom of the tote with hay ( see pic). Next, put in the Styrofoam. You can use a cooler or get Styrofoam pieces and line inside of tote. Cut holes in the Styrofoam to match up with holes in tote. Now stuff hay between the walls of the tote and Styrofoam walls. Pack it in ( see pic). Put a lid, or layer of foam on top, then the tote lid. You can tape lid down tight with duct tape. And now you have an insulated home for cats to stay warm in for the cold weather! Dont be discouraged if the cats dont immediately move in- these cats survive by being cautious so may take some time to check it out. Anyone out there have other tips or ideas? We would love to hear them.
