For all the work I have done empowering others to make difficult decisions and do whats right for themselves and their families, I have sorely neglected taking care of the toxic aspects of my own life. Out of fear, out of regret, out of misguided and misplaced trust and love, out of a desire to see my family settled and at peace...all of these reasons motivate even the strongest of us as we bumble through life effing up the things we value most. Today, I took all of my own best advice. I stood up for myself. I became my own advocate, and an advocate for my children. I started what will probably be a long and costly journey to finally being rid of what doesnt work - and while it was terrifying, it was the most empowered thing Ive done in close to a decade. This isnt about revenge, anger, jealousy, or spite. This is about self-love, protecting my family, and being the best person I can be in a world that doesnt take kindly to people trying to be their best selves. I guess what Im saying is - if I can lay my soul bare, seek help from any service with the word victim, and expose my personal life in front of strangers - you can too. So do that, if you must - gracefully, fearlessly, independently - and know that this is its own reward.
