For all those people that think its a great idea that Holden and Ford are shutting down or that it had to happen heres a little extra info that I think will change your mind... First of all Holden was promised by the Labor Government $500 million dollars assistance over 3 years to keep its production viable. A lot of you may think that this is a large amount of money, but in the scheme of things it is very small. Not one motoring manufacturer in the world runs without subsidization from the home country of manufacture. Look it up, its a fact. Ill explain why the home country does this below. However, back to the politics. When Tony Abbott won the last election, he decided to cut that funding back to 350 million. Holden and General Motors its parent company were still happy to accept this assistance and fund the rest of their production operations. However some months later, the deal had not been signed, and within a matter of days of the deal to be inked, the Liberal Government went to press stating that no further funding would be provided to Australian vehicle manufacturers indefinitely. Now the majority of motoring manufacturers run at a loss, however its the government assistance that keeps their production viable. The Liberal Government had made a very grave mistake and heres why... Holden alone employs a very large amount of staff. 13,500 Holden workers alone are expected to lose their jobs when production ceases. Analysts predict that around 65,000 total jobs will be lost due to the demise of local production. Do the math and if the government was to fund any Australian manufacturer say 500 million dollars over just ONE year (not over the initial 3 as promised by Labor) then based on a $50,000 annual salary over 65,000 jobs they would make every last cent invested back in taxes paid by these workers. (65,000 jobs x $8,000 - the estimated tax payed based on the above salary = $520 million) Instead, the majority of these workers will now become unemployed and be living off welfare from the government and taking far more money out of the Liberal Governments Piggy Bank than if theyd simply invested. Smart move Tony right??? But heres another horrible kickback to the dilemma. Not only are we losing jobs, we are depriving our children of opportunities in the Australian Motoring Industry. Jobs as mechanics, electricians, designers and engineers to just mention a few. If our children want to pursue a career in this field they will be forced to pursue their dreams in another country far away from home. We are selling off and selling out to what is one of this countrys greatest assets, denying ourselves opportunities and destroying the economy all at the same time... Think it over, i dont think any of us deserve to be cheering about the demise of local automotive manufacturing...
