For all you Joggers Recently, there was a major flood in Boulder, CO. I was very lucky and did not receive the brunt like some of my friends and fellow neighbors did. FEMA and Red Cross or Salvation Army? - did their part in providing a place to get supplies, food, support and money for damages. During that time, a friend of mine invited me down to that place just behind Quiznos, on Araphoe and 55th street. Two tents were set up in the parking lot. One, for free accupuncture; and the other, for free ROLFING, (a body restructuring massage-type body work). While my friend was enjoying a free session, I mosied on over and found myself engaged in an interesting conversation about the myths and the bad advice often given by health professionals. One of these had to do with jogging. Jogging?!, you cry out. - As I did. I mean, how could jogging be bad for you? Well, I asked that same question, and here is what was revealed to me. Take it or leave it. Im not attempting to change your mind; only to give you more food-for-thought in order to make a more informed decision. You dont need to run anymore than about three miles at once. In fact, it may be harmful to do so. Apparently, you can get all the benefit you need from running 3 miles, and no more. Any more than that and you begin to run the risk of heart problems. Heart problems? I was always told that running would make your heart stronger! Whats this about problems? Well, as it was explained to me - the more you run, the more you strain the fibers of your heart and stretch them out. Eventually, when called upon to do something more than a simple job - the immediate stress on those stretched out heart, muscle fibers, can cause them to tear. Now, again, I dont know this to be true. Its only what I heard. But it might bear more looking into. So, Ive cut down my 6-10 mile run around Boulder, to just under 3 miles. And to think...I was training myself to eventually run the marathon! *shiver*
