For almost fifty years, the US government has had an effective tool for ensuring fair elections: sending teams of federal observers to polling stations across the country. But in light of a 2013 Supreme Court decision, the Justice Department has concluded that it no longer has the authority to send observers to those jurisdictions. Attorney Steven Wright, who led federal observers many times while working in the Civil Rights Division at the Justice Department, writes that “voters this November will have less recourse against election-day misconduct than at any time since the Civil Rights era.”
