For almost three days our home would be filled with the scents of cookies and Russian bread and my dad made some awesome teacakes. Mom would borrow the coffee pot from the church and we would have a huge pot of tea flavored with Welchs grape juice. Last minute cleaning left our hard working hands with the lovely Pine Sol perfume. We were able to stay awake past our 9:00 bed time to hear the Hoonah Russian Orthodox choir. The conversation for the men was preparing for the fishing season and having their sons with them. Moms would talk about the crab cannery work. I was always so amazed their capability to sing Russian Orthodox songs in a different language, spoke to each other on Tlingit (if they were talking about you) and ask is to get more coffee in English.
