For any horror/suspense movie fans out there, I saw a fantastic movie today and I want to highly recommend it to you. There is a new Australian horror movie out called The Babadook which frankly is just amazing. No blood or guts, no slashing or even anyone dying, actually. Just amazing acting by actress Essie Davis as a single mother whose husband died the night she gave birth to her now seven year old son (played brilliantly by Noah Wiseman). She is still in mourning and dealing with a son who, to put it lightly, has his own grief issues. A mysterious book called Mister Babadook arrives in their home which describes a horrible creature in grotesque rhymes known only as The Babadook. And from that point on, things get creepier and weirder. The awesome thing about this movie is it plays on two levels: as a straight-up monster movie and as a psychological thriller where the monster may just be all in your head. It keeps you guessing the entire time (not an easy thing to do to me) and you become completely involved in the lives of this poor mother and son, mainly because they convince you very quickly that they are real people in a very possible supernatural scenario. Whats even more amazing to me is that this is the writer/director Jennifer Kents first time directing. No spoilers - Ill just say that you dont come out of this movie freaked out or upset. Instead, it is thought provoking on many levels and very entertaining. I hope you enjoy it.
