Though they may never admit to it, it seems clear that the attention my brother received (press, indiegogo, letters to him and the warden, books) put an enormous pressure on the institution to expedite his transfer. By making it abundantly clear that we would remain perpetually vigilant and relentlessly supportive, we became the overseers overseers. While they are certainly accustomed to exerting power over marginalized individuals whose identity is stripped when their names become numbers, they are never comfortable under the outside microscope that our unremitting alertness created. Perhaps we simply missed an important person. Maybe our primary intention was to relay to Ceschi how much he is loved. Still, we found power in a powerless place, and you all gave him strength when he needed it most. Surely they will never acknowledge the fact that we influenced their rigid process. But it is undeniable that they felt our collective breath raising the hairs on the back of their necks.
