For anyone thats been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or - TopicsExpress

For anyone thats been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder: Wasnt going to share this. But during the interview process here at the resort in Saint Lucia I was asked if I would be able to handle the stress of moving if I got the job here and would I possibly relapse given my diagnosis of bipolar disorder 12 years ago. I was shocked and felt like I had to defend myself (even tho I know deep down I had nothing to prove). Mind you, he wasnt a supervisor that I would answer to. Just a colleague who had stalked my website where i publicly share about my diagnosis so as to help others to see that they dont need to be trapped by a diagnosis. And even if he was someone I would have to report to- is that relevant or appropriate to even ask? No. I let him know right then and there that in the course of 12 years having been given this label that I have learned how to interrupt my self defeating patterns and most importantly I know myself inside and out. Therefore I know what I need in order to maintain my peace of mind on a daily basis. Its taken me 12 years of trying to figure it out - to figure out what works for me. And also the fact that its none of his damn business and a major personal boundary was crossed. These types of questions once again show me how little people really do know about those who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Just because you have been given a label of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or whatever does not make you incapable of being (highly) functional. Its all about taking your life and your health into your hands. Dont ever let anyone make you feel like you are inadequate. Because no one can unless you let them.
