For every Unemployed person...must read!!! ***WHY YOU MAY BE UNEMPLOYED AFTER CAMPUS: A case study on how to avoid youth unemployment!!! Over the past one month, I have been immersed in trying to solve the hardest puzzle both at micro and macro level. The puzzle of why people have the degrees but are not getting employed. I am now comfortable that I have finally cracked the code from one of those Aha moments we all experience from time to time. So the question is why is it that some people get the jobs easily while others dont? I present my simple reasons, hoping never to discuss this ever again. 1.Most Youths rarely grow their SOCIAL CAPITAL This comes down to WHO you know and what they know about you. I got my first job through a Facebook tie and thereafter many other jobs on social media. I quickly realized the secret that 50% of the jobs are not supposed to be advertised. They are advertised through word of mouth. The problem is most people connect with only their age mates at campus. They forget to grow their social capital. You need to expand your social circles beyond your collegemates. Most jobs come from what I call our weak ties, our friends of friends of friends. How well do you network with people you meet, whether at weddings or funerals? Your job may be at that kwanjula you attend. A simple introduction of what you do and what you desire can land you, your next job. Connections and Networks are traditionally the major source of information about job opportunities. Grow your networks everyday. 2. Most youths lack skills relevant to the workplace. We are still theoretical as far as our education system is concerned, but thats not the major point, the point is how well can you adjust to a new workplace and learn quickly? Young people also lack the basic skills such as cooperation, communication, critical thinking, creativity and a focua on the needs of the enterprise. Most of the time, bright students apply for jobs but they cant express themselves before a panel of interviewers. At the end of the day, its not what you get out of university that matters, its what university gets out of you. 3. Young People are driven by Money In most cases, your mission should be about penetrating a given company and then once you are inside, you can strategize about growing in the ranks. But because most young people are driven by the salary, they end up neglecting certain jobs. Get into a company and do your level best, they will notice you and add you more responsibilities, as you work, your eyes get opened to other opportunities. Money should not be your major drive, excellence should. 4.Failing to structure your CV to meet the employers requirements This is a clue, look at the words the employer uses in his advert and use the same in the CV you send them. If they say they want a self-driven person, describe yourself as self-driven. 5. Failing to see the jobs This comes to the inner eye. You can convince a company to create a job for you that didnt previously exist. Look around you and you can see jobs that did not previously exist but now do exist. 6. Persistence, Strong Will and Not Quitting I spoke to a guy who wrote over 100 job applications until he got called for 5 jobs. He had a strong drive. It doesnt matter whether the job seems out of your field or you lack some of the requirements. Just apply for it and prove yourself during interviews. As long as it has a link to what you did at campus, gp for it. You can always upgrade your skills while on the job. Dont let things of 4 years experience scare you, those things are included to scare the hell out of the cowardly graduates. Just apply for the job. 7. Inner Game This comes back to your inner person, your attitude and mindset. If you think jobs are scarse, they will always be scarse. But if you believe that you must get a job, you will always get it. With those 7 tips, we close the debate.
