For fourteen years ,Ive dedicated a week every February to gathering writers --of all levels, some advanced, some just starting out--on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, the most beautiful place I know, for the purpose of helping them tell the story of their lives. This year, because of family issues, I briefly considered not hosting the workshop. But I came pretty swiftly to the conclusion that now in particular--in the middle of much change, at a time when the gift of being alive on this planet has never felt more precious--I would make my way to the lake for a week that has become, for me, a comforting and inspiring constant . So the sixteen of us (plus our yoga instructor, Lorraine Gengo, and my stalwart right hand woman, Rebecca Tuttle Schultze, will gather as always, in my garden overlooking the lake and the volcano, and for seven days and eight nights, our one mission will be to uncover and share our stories, and to develop the tools that will send us all home as stronger, more authentic writers. (This includes me, by the way. I learn something every year. ) We will be fed--no, nourished--with extraordinary meals from the man who has become not only our chef, but a dear friend, Henry D Lehr. Weve got a wonderful group of women coming to the lake this year--a few returning writers from past years workshops, and others who have never laid eyes on this place, or set foot in Central America. It is a perpetual joy to see their faces as they step off the boat for the first time onto the dock in front of my house and take in this place. One place remains. joycemaynard/Joyce_Maynard/Write_By_Lake_Atitlan.html
