For immediate release 11 September 2014 The Methodist Church of Southern Africa condemns the irresponsible public mudslinging and attack on constitutional bodies such as the Office of the Public Protector. Attacking the integrity of the Office of the Public Protector, an independent constitutionally protected institution mandated to uphold our statutory democracy undermines any democratic gains made thus far. We condemn in the strongest terms the wilful discrediting of any Chapter 9 institutions especially by government officials when there exist appropriate channels and processes for grievances to be heard and dealt with. Denigration of the character of an office holder, in this case Thuli Madonsela, rather than serious consideration and engagement with the veracity of proffered reports reflects democratic immaturity. For the sake of our hard earned democracy; a democracy for which many made the ultimate sacrifice [prompting their progeny to place their hope in the ANC because of its illustrious struggle credentials], we must use all the means at our disposal to protect our constitution and the institutions mandated with this task. We must not fall into the trap of allowing past liberation struggle victories to cloud democratic and lawful process in the present. We, further call and urge all implicated in wrongdoing to do the honourable thing and step aside allowing the democratic processes to unfold in the greater interest of the country and her peoples.
