For interested Cap. U. students: ENGL 107, First Nations Literature and Film Instructor: Brian Ganter “For Indigenous nations to live, capitalism must die. And for capitalism to die, we must actively participate in the construction of Indigenous alternatives to it.” – Glen Coulthard Novel, poetry, short story, documentary film, graphic novel, video game. First Nations Literature and Film explores the contributions of a variety of Indigenous writers, artists, and film-makers who speak within, outside of and against the borders of “Canada.” The course is an introduction to creative and critical works from Indigenous voices on matters of realism and fantasy, the history of colonialism, reconciliation, the legacies of residential schools, treaties and land claims, the Indian Act and self-government, decolonization and territorial claims, Idle No More, women’s and ‘Two-spirited’ voices, media (mis)representations of Indigenous peoples and many other issues. The focus on contemporary literature features contemporary writers and filmmakers making use of unorthodox idioms (science fiction, the zombie film, and video games) to engage with emergent forms of 21st century forms of neo-colonialism and Empire.
