For many, adoption is just tossed into the sin “bucket” with everything else. I define the “bucket” as the reason Christ had to come to earth – for most Christ had to come to earth to deal with the sin issue. That is actually not true – Christ had to come to earth for 3 reasons and even if man had not sinned he would still have had to come through incarnation. Whether man sinned or not – it was always God’s intension to included created in uncreated – to include created humanity in the relationship of uncreated God – to be adopted from the created family of humanity into the uncreated family of the Godhead – that is what adoption is – no other word defines this as accurately as does adoption. Paul in Gal 1:15-16 suggests that God was thrilled to reveal to Paul that the reality of his true identity was not contained in his emergence from the womb of a woman, but that God revealed his true identity in the gracious nature of the Godhead – literally God surnamed him (gave him his identity as our parents did when we were born). What God revealed was his son – Jesus Christ - was in him thus he was sent forth to preach the same truth to the masses - that Christ was also in them as he was already in Paul. In 1 Cor 5: 14-17 Paul further tells us why this good news sent him racing around the middle east. The love that God demonstrated toward him by including him in the Godhead relationship compelled him to get the word out that since Jesus was in all then when Christ died all died and in dying for all – all live because of the resurrection and no longer have to live in the death of their falleness, but now can participate in the same relationship that has existed in the Godhead for eternity past. Therefore we no longer see anyone as coming from a woman’s womb (the flesh) even though we knew Christ in that way at one time – we no longer see anyone that way any longer. Since all are in Christ all have become part of the uncreated spirit life of the Godhead. We are no longer just created beings but created beings included in uncreated through Christ who is the mediator between created and uncreated – in this we have been freed from the law of sin and the law of death – those were dealt with on the cross and we now live in the renewal of the spirit life of the Godhead experiencing it here and now in part, but then face to face with him in glorious relationship. In 2 Cor. 3:17-18 Paul tells us in light of this freedom we experience through the indwelling Holy Spirit and our desire to participate in our inclusion in it we can now look in a mirror at ourselves and see (no longer blind to this reality) the glory of God – we can see ourselves as the new and unique expression of God that each of us are, which were created in the glory of the image and likeness of God, but now are included in the glory of uncreated, soon to be in his very presence. For we now know that even if this body is dissolved we have a new body not made with hands in heaven that is eternal. And boy I for one can’t wait for that new body, this one seems to be a little weary – not that I desire to lose the distinction of who I am as God created me, but to be clothed upon by the new body, in that this mortal body would be swallowed up in the life in the new. This is what God has done for us on our behalf and is his delight, even giving us the indwelling Spirit to seal the deal and have a taste of what is to come. (2 Cor 5:1-5) Jesus tried to explain all this to Nic at night in John 3 – just as we created beings came from our mothers created womb into this created realm – our true identity lies in the fact that the universe was created in the uncreated womb of God and humanity was birthed into the uncreated spirit realm of the Godhead – marvel not that ye must be born of water (womb) and of spirit – with God all things are possible and unless you are born again you cannot even see the kingdom of heaven to respond to its invitation to participate in it. Paul declares the full scope of this reality in Eph 1 when he says: “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed humanity with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen humanity in him before the foundation of the world, that humanity should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having predestinated humanity unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made humanity accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom humanity has redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; 8 Wherein he hath abounded toward humanity in all wisdom and prudence; 9 Having made known unto humanity the mystery (adoption) of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11 In whom also humanity has obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel (good news declaration) of your salvation (described in verses 3-11): in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” As verses 13-14 suggest – we have been given the freedom to choose to participate in what we have already been included in – first as created beings and now as part of uncreated . Do you desire to engage in relationship with the Godhead that exists in the uncreated realm which all have been included in – the choice is yours – the earnest of our inheritance is the Holy spirit – this is betrothal language (what we call getting engaged to be married today – the earnest would be similar to an engagement ring) – do you desire to be the bride of Christ - to engage in relationship with the Godhead in the uncreated realm in which all have been included. What pleasure God has in store for us in this is beyond all comprehension.
