For me composing is primarily a search to find melodies and harmonies that lift the human spirit into alignment with the divine. I think that basing music on consonance and strong melody is still needed to help listeners align to higher consciousness. On the other hand, basing music on dissonance, which has become widespread in contemporary classical music, greatly limits the size of the audience that is capable of enjoying such compositions. To bring the full power of music to the general public, basing music on consonance is the more practical and attractive approach. The more successful 20th century composers have done that, or for those composers who used both styles, it is virtually always the case that their more consonant music has had the greatest successes with audiences. There is a reason why audiences love Coplands Appalachian Spring and Fanfare for the Common Man more than his modernistic Orchestral Variations (still a well-composed, quality work, but much harder for audiences due to its severe dissonant style with less melody). Goreckis Symphony no. 3 is another example of a very successful work due to its moving use of melody and consonance, whereas his dissonant Symphony no. 1 attracted relatively little following.
