For me this program was very much instinctively composed, in a way – Im interested in friction, not necessarily fusion. And so for me, recitals are interesting sites for that, because youve got a larger canvas to work with: what can we maybe find in repertoire written centuries ago? What does that sound like? How does that feel? Thats what I love about listening to music – the kinds of strange connections that we make, connections that can be unexpected, that can even be a little bit subversive too, just in terms of listening to something in a different context than what was originally intended. I spoke to Sterling Beeaff at KBAQ about my upcoming recital program at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Come hear me perform music by David Lang, Bach, Elliott Carter, Julia Wolfe, Rachmaninoff, and Mussorgsky at the Virginia G. Piper Theater on Sunday, January 25, at 7:30pm.
