For more than ten days Colombia has been facing the “paro nacional agrario”, the national strike of farmers. Thousands of “campesinos” joined together in squares and streets all over the Country – wearing the traditional woolen ponchos and sombreros – to protest against the liberal policies which are destroying the agri-food industry. The police, in riot gear, has received an order to disperse the protesters; hundreds of people got injured or arrested and a 16 year old boy, hit by a bullet, got killed. As reported by MISNA, the Minister of Defense, Juan Carlos Pinzón, said: “It is clear that (among the protesters, ed) there are not doves, but only vandals criminals to serve dark interests, certainly the terrorists of the FARC, in some cases, and their political masters.” The government has promised reforms but the unions have menaced new mobilizations in case of no practical response by the authorities.
