For much of my lifetime, the American media has been tightly controlled by a handful of corporations whose main task since 1945 was to terrify Americans into believing that the Russians were coming and so we needed ever more missiles and nuclear warheads and submarines. Theyve had decades to create a false reality for a citizenry largely uneducated by public schools that teach conformity with an occasional advanced degree in consumerism. What then is a true political party? Well, one that has a base firmly in the interests of a class, be it workers or fox hunters. Officially we have two parties which are in fact wings of a common party of property, with two right wings. It was as if a prosperous victorious nation - which we were - had been bitten by a werewolf, the werewolf of empire, and so became rabid, and then gone mad before our eyes, to the horror of our friends; and of considerable anxiety even to foes. - Gore Vidal
