For my Facebook friends who seem to think that theres no excuse for the rioters in Ferguson, let me show you what a double standard you have. Because you do not denounce with the same fervor the riots of white people. And they riot all the time. I should know: such riots have happened in Bloomington. When they do, they happen in the district I represent. Read this story, Police use tear gas on unruly crowd after loss; Students complain they were given no warning in the April 3, 2002 of the Bloomington Herald-Times. They threw bottles and rocks at police officers. Tear gas. Vandalism. This happened in my district. No one, but no one, said in response to this that white people were to blame. And what was the riot about? Not about civil rights; it was about a lost basketball game. Every city has issues about the police and fairness. Weve had our share over the years, but Im happy to say this story does not reflect negatively on the Bloomington Police Department. (Its partly my job to keep an eye on the BPD to make sure that they uphold the law fairly. But Im proud to say that our department keeps Bloomington safe and civil. And Bloomingtonians -- as a government, as a populace -- try actively to make it an equitable place. Unlike other places, we dont force the police to carry all the burden of building a safe and civil community.) Meanwhile, this other guy has a blog full of riot photos. Never have I heard the white people in these scenes decried on a national cable news or talk show. (They arent just rioting about sporting events, either: how about a pumpkin fest?) If youre inclined to say that black culture is somehow to blame for the looting and rioting in Ferguson, until you denounce white culture with equal fervor -- EVERY time it happens -- you really should just shut up.
