For my current show I was asked to write an artists statement. I shy away from imprisoning my thoughts about my work in text, but sat and while drinking a cup of coffee wrote the following notes for the text. Upon getting home, sitting at my keyboard, my intention was to expand upon the notes as per usual. But no, I decided to leave them stand, raw and honest as they from my head in the cafe. If they look like a poem it is because thats how I wrote the notes as they came to me. It is certainly not a poem. I have never slept well. With the night comes another world. Awareness of responsibility, freedoms, will, power and fate. Bad conscience and guilt. The cruel revenge of thought. The authoritarian punishment of knowledge. Repressed, I turn inward against the nature of the animal. Inhibited, thwarted aggression re-channeled into creativity. Forcibly checked by society, I submit. A twilight world of greater reality sustains me. Self tyranny, the cruelty of the artist. Contempt, contradiction and negation. Such sinister and ghastly labour of love, On behalf of a soul lost.
