For my international friends this is a bit of our English tradition that dates back to medieval times... Morris dancers....which I can remember coming round from street to street with the May Pole which men and women did in celebration of fertility..... but there is loads you can read about in wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_dance the blacked faces were being talked about as to the origin of this .. as there had been a debate on the political correctness of this....! and there is theory that it was so those dancing would not be recognised.... but when I look on Wikipedia it seems to have some link with the Moors from Morocco.... so fascinating to get behind it all...
