For my numerous Kashmiri friends; tourism is the bread and butter of many Kashmiri people . Then, why is it that they do not nurture it. It is primarily a lack of sensitization; the absence of realization that they have the assets but it is tourists that have to be attracted. From reports I get, tourists are shunning the Kashmir paradise because of exorbitant prices, negative attitude of those who run the facilities, rude behaviour and poor upkeep of resources. It is a matter of time before tourists will find other destinations. A holiday in Thailand, for example, is cheaper and without the attendant negativity of Kashmir. I also feel it is the apathy of the Government in not refining its best asset and not having the passion to be the best in the business. Why is Kashmir not looking towards developing Rural Tourism; it can be a game changer in the tourist industry. Kashmir Images editorial today covers this issue very well. I wish more Kashmiri media, English and Urdu, takes upon itself to do this sensitization.
