For one of my writing assignments, I had to select a topic and make a bullet list of suggestions on something that I knew how to do. After thinking for about 4 days about something I could do well, I finally came up with the topic of parenting. So, heres my list of Top 10 suggestions. Please note the deliberate use of suggestions, not commandments or even rules. Parenting is the worlds most difficult job to do well and no one is perfect, least of all me. So here goes...the essay will probably follow....and my humblest apologies to my kids who know all too well that these lessons came often at their expense. :) 1 - Be a parent, NOT a buddy. 2) Parent well enough to work yourself out of the job. 3) Nurture yourself FIRST so you can nurture your child. 4) Say yes as much as possible (as in, Yes, you can have a cookie after dinner..) 5) When you make a mistake, admit it to your kid and say the words I was wrong I am sorry. Will you forgive me? 6) Learn your childs passion and speak to them about it, even if -- and especially if -- it is something you have no interest in 7) Know where your life ends and their begins and respect that boundary 8) Do not handicap your child by having them live the life you never had 9) Do not protect them from failures, especially your own. Let these be opportunities on how to do things better. and 10) When in doubt, trust your gut.
