For only the second time in 30 years, Austin soul show band Ernie Sky & The K-Tels Featuring The Mighty Big Horns will reunite for a single performance November 1, 2014 at The Roost in Austin. Award-winning, soul-busting Ernie Sky & The K-Tels ruled the rhythm and blues scene in the region from 1982 to 1986. Establishing themselves as Austin’s answer to Chicago, Tower of Power, and Huey Lewis and the News and featuring the blistering vocals of showman Ernie Sky, the 8-piece band toured extensively with BB King, James Brown, Albert King, Sam (and Dave) Moore, and others. The band took multiple Austin Chronicle music awards including 1982’s Best Show by a Local Band (the Paramount Theater with BB King) and Best Male Vocalist (Ernie Sky); 1983’s Best Soul Band and Best Texas 45 (“Blackeyed Susan”); and 1985’s Best Soul Band. In addition to classic soul and R&B covers, the band performed original material and released two 45s on Hideaway Records. Receiving rave reviews from Shreveport to Houston, Ernie Sky & The K-Tels packed nightclubs, showcase rooms and dance floors around the region. Ernie Sky & The K-Tels Featuring The Mighty Big Horns perform at The Roost, 2113 Wells Branch Pkwy, Austin, TX from 8 to 10 PM Saturday, November 1st. This is their only performance! Advance tickets are available through Front Gate Tickets here. What the press said about Ernie Sky & The K-Tels: THE TIMES (SHREVEPORT – BOSSIER): “This is one of the hottest dance bands in town, with a repertoire that mixes the best of ‘60s soul with originals that sound like they were written by the masters.” DALLAS MORNING NEWS: “Ol’ Mr. Soulful himself, Ernie has a marvelous sense of humor and sings with a voice that will you gasping. There’s no one around these days who can put a song across any better.” SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS NEWS: “One of Austin’s top R&B bands…have large followings all over the Texas (and vicinity) music circuit – San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Shreveport, LA and more.” AUSTIN AMERICAN - STATESMAN: “Ernie’s voice might have inspired the phrase “blue-eyed soul.’ ACTION MAGAZINE (SAN ANTONIO): “As the band runs through its ultra-tight sets that range from James Brown to the Isley Brothers and everything in between including a double handful of originals that just as easily could have been written by Otis Redding or Steve Cropper, it’s obvious these guys are just as serious as a garlic donut about what they’re doing.” THE DAILY TEXAN (AUSTIN): “…belts out vocals as if he gargles with gravel and hones his tonsils with a whet stone. He is one of the best R&B singers around.” THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE: Ernie Sky and his excellent eight-piece band tore through three sets of intelligent, original and respectful versions of soul classics…that can stand next to the originals. Two impressive original songs…and several fine vocals from the K-Tels’ lead guitarist proved to me that they were paying homage to their cover material – not hiding behind it.” Check out the K-Tels award winning 45, “Blackeyed Susan,” here!
