For our April 15 Song-a-day we visit the Malaysian port city of Melaka and commemorate its declaration as an historic state. Melaka may have been under subsequent Portuguese, Dutch and then eventually British control before becoming part of Malaysia, but a Malaysian government website reminds us of the citys independent origins: It all started sprawling back to 751 years ago (1262) when Parameswara found Melaka in the 14th century. He was resting under a tree by a river when his dog started to attack a mouse deer, which later pushed the dog into the river. The brave gesture of the mouse deer had impressed him to immediately build a city on its spot. Not the worst reason to build a city! AATW honors the fine city of Melaka by singing, My Rickshaw, a traditional Malaysian song about a rickshaw (pedal cab) driver from Melaka who drives us tourists all over town.
