For our May 30th song-a-day AATW travels to Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean where we mark the melding of two very different cultures. From this date in 1845 until the 1917 nearly 100,000 immigrants from India came to the distant Caribbean, most brought as indentured servants to provide cheap post-slavery labor in the islands sugar plantations. They brought South Asian language, culture and religion--most were Hindu, though some were Muslim--that has fused with the character of the islands to create distinct Indo-Carribbean music, cuisine and celebrations that survive today. Today we sing Jhulo, a Trinidadian lullaby in Bhojpuri that appears in our Caribbean season, about the sandalwood cradle of the Hindi Lord Krishna. listen here: bit.ly/1kq4vKC
