For our current 6th and 7th graders to consider for next school year: Why would you take a high school class for credit while in the middle school? The best reason is to get started early so you have room in your high school schedule to take upper level math or foreign language classes in order to better prepare your transcript for colleges to see. Your grades from middle school do not show up on your transcript in the HS. You only get credit for the class. The grade is not a part of your GPA. When you are taking a HS class, you are required to complete homework each day, study for tests and stay in the course for the entire year. The work load is heavier than middle school classes. You will need to maintain a B average for the year or retake the class the following year. There are very few options for electives if you want to drop the class. After 10 days into the school year, you will not be allowed to drop the class until the semester or the end of the school year. A final exam is a part of your semester grade. If you like to study, do your homework and attend school regularly, you may be a candidate for taking a foreign language. If you want to be considered for one of these classes, fill in the information below. ____I would like to take a foreign Language for HS Credit – YEAR-LONG Mark your choice: ___Chinese FLC101C ___Korean FLK101C ___Spanish FLS101 German FLG101C (taught at the HS) I have not taken this course before and I don’t speak the language: ___1st year If you have passed the first year course with a B or better: ___2nd year If you have passed the 2nd year course with a B or better: ___3rd year Are you a native speaker of the class you want to take? ___YES ___NO If yes, you will need to speak to the counselor or principal. The first year course in the middle school is specifically designed for non-speakers. The pace and content will not be challenging and it is not recommended. You are encouraged to take a language that you do not already speak while in the middle school. **SAMS has a Chinese program to give students an opportunity that is not available in most schools. Learning to speak Chinese is a great way to give your children an advantage in the increasingly competitive business world. International businesses prefer to hire people who speak more than one language. China has become a huge market and business leaders are looking for people who can speak Chinese and operate successfully in a Chinese cultural context. As China now has opened up to the West, there are opportunities for employment in all areas.
