For our new visitors. Welcome aboard. If you are not familiar with the MV Naomh Eanna and her history you may like to watch this short film on life in Inishmaan (Inis Meáin) in the early 1970s. Inishmaan (meaning middle island) is the middle of the three Aran Islands in Galway Bay on the west coast of Ireland. It is part of County Galway in the province of Connacht. The MV Naomh Eanna was the important link to the mainland of Ireland for a small group of three islands which make up the Aran Islands. The ship was built in the Liffey Dockyard, Dublin from 1956 to 1958. She is the last riveted built ship in not only Ireland but Europe. The ship did 30 long years of loyal service to these three islands, to and from Galway Bay through one of the roughest seas in the world, until she retired in 1988. In no doubt not only did she help the survival of these wonderful isolated communities of the sea and in that save a unique and important part of Irelands culture and heritage but most importantly help assist the survival of the Irish (Gaeilge) language during years when it could have so easily been lost and forgotten forever. After a long and difficult battle and campaign by us the people the ship has recently been saved from the immediate threat of being broken up and sold for scrap metal, which sadly looked a real possibility at the start of this year. A business plan to have her restored in the hope she can sail back under her own steam to her beloved Aran Islands and Galway Bay has been drawn up and put together and its currently lying at the stage of getting together enough investors to be able to progress to the next stage, which we hope will be the start of her restoration work in 2015.
