For over a century, the Rio Grande has been the border between the U.S. and Mexico. But rivers can move. In 1864 the river shifted and a 700 acre piece of land called the Chamizal, switched sides. The U.S. controlled the area for 100 years before giving it back to Mexico on September 25, 1964. But by that time, roughly 5,000 people had moved in and made it their home.
