For over twenty years, the Chicago Tribune lay at the foot of my driveway. Especially enjoyable, the Sunday Trib-- a decadent, lazy weekend ritual involving unhurried cups of coffee. Nonetheless, I am canceling my Tribune subscription. Wisely, Governor Quinn boldly and thoughtfully followed suit yesterday with New York and New Jersey enacting a 21-day quarantine of those in close contact with Ebola--aid workers, doctors-from the affected African nations- trying to reenter our streets, public transportation, restaurants, and, yes, bowling alleys. Interestingly, this story was relegated to page 6 of the Tribunes front page section. Really? Polls show the majority of Americans favor this decree, and certainly this move to safeguard the public made headlines in papers in New York and New Jersey. However, the Tribune, a solid supporter of businessman Rauner, obviously buried the Quinn position, knowing Quinns intelligent action might sway some undecided voters to the Democrat Quinn. Shame on you, Chicago Tribune. Oh, and FYI- to those who oppose upholding the legality of payments to the teacher pension system: I hope youve enjoyed the roads you drive on, the hospitals that treat you, the libraries, the schools, etc., that were paid for on the backs of the teachers pension system member payments, now grossly underfunded due to misuse and misdirection of member contributions. Just to clear up a couple of common misperceptions: when I retire as a public school teacher, I will pay my own health insurance-over $800 a month, along with another $1400 a month if I want to cover a husband (and dont mind eating dog food 3 times a week), and I cannot collect on social security contributions I made over the course of my work outside of teaching. Protect teacher pensions. Vote Quinn.
