For several months now Ive been looking forward to seeing the ad for the Zoosk dating app. It is one of the cleverest ads Ive ever seen. Very minimalist and smart with a voiceover that states, Love does not come first...first comes like. Believable performances, appealing characters, real situations, a brief but strong narrative arc that takes only 30 seconds. Today, however, I found this Youtube link for the original 60-second commercial that dispenses with the voiceover and relies entirely on the narrative skill of the director and the cast (and a beeping smoke alarm). It shows the brilliance of the 30-second editing, but the longer version is so sweet, real, universal and believable that you find yourself believing that the actors really like each other and really had fallen in love. Theres even an opening depiction of the universal fantasy of love that smartly shifts to the real thing, entirely without words. Carefully watch each scene for the little nuances that pass carelessly by but create an astonishing sense of reality. God! Even Ive fallen hook, line and sinker when she wipes the pizza sauce from his face at the end.
