For so very many years now this is the only way a transperson would be presented to the public. However, lets not kid ourselves, this episode, and his response were an exceptionally rare outcome. I seem to recall, it almost always ended up in fights, and the transperson was the bad guy. Watch it twice, once for content, then watch and listen to the crowd. I hated it, and I grew to hate Jerry for it. I remember a time, when his shows were a real show, where he actually cared about his stories, and the people in them. I remember one show, where he had some homeless kids on, and was going to give them a makeover. But, as the story progressed, the make overs didnt happen, and instead they had a real and honest talk about, why the were where they found themselves. And, then it was amazing, Jerry was a human being, and the more important ideas were shared. I walked away with a clearer understanding of what these kids went through. It was amazing. Jerry was amazing. And those kids. Those kids were amazing. But, then Montel got into a fight, and the great sellout came about. Seemed like most of the talk show host, saw the ratings, bathed in the cash, and sold, not only their own souls, but ours as well, to the evil that if its different, its because it wants to hurt you. And, of all the talk show magnates sold out, as quickly, obviously, and unabashedly as Jerry. He quickly left all the other talk show host in his dust, and one by one, they left the game. Not out of any moral sense, but because they couldnt compete with the ratings. Everyone watched Jerry. And, our community was one of the biggest scapegoats, driving many of us deeper into the closet. Thus, I kinda feel like no singular person had done us more harm, and pushed us back than Jerry Springer. Ive heard hes recently stated that he was sorry for all the things he showed. And, I suppose that if thats true, I should forgive him. But, that doesnt mean I have to forget. If he really wants to make amends, why not do a new Jerry Springer show, where instead of resorting to the old tactics, he told the real stories of the trans community. It would be cool if he gave any transperson that wanted to tell a real story a chance to speak to the world.
