For some people, it is creating a beautiful canvas, whether with a camera, a paintbrush or a pen. For some others, it could be cracking a deal bigger than the experienced ones in the company. For some more, it is saving the planet one day at a time. I can’t aspire for the last because it takes a completely different breed of people to do that. But for me, it is just cooking up something I’ve been craving. As a citizen, I don’t really crave anything, because Bombay being such a foodie city, you can get anything you want, almost any time you want it. As a cook, I don’t crave much, because if I really want something I can just make it. But sometimes, traditional recipes scare a self-taught modern cook like me. And I have not been that child who sat by her mother’s apron and observed and learned things over time. Also, mistakenly, I used to always associate grinding spices with a very gender-oriented, traditional woman-in-the-kitchen role, which used to put me off. Now that I have grown up, my outlook is different of course. Coming back to the original point, I rarely crave something, and when I do, traditional cooking is not my forte. But thanks to the internet and recipe books, I get inspired very easily. 2 days back, on Eid to be specific, I was willing to go on an exchange program. Biryani and Sheer Qurma for Continental and Brownies. Apart from getting plenty of ideas and leads from supportive friends, there were no invitations :p So, I decided, why not?! (My new mantra in life) So after researching tons of recipes, Chicken Biryani haazir hai. We have been and continue to be, really busy because of the festive season so my birthday treat (yeah, that crazy a schedule!) to my employees was still pending. One of them asked me for her favorite Boondi Raita. So, that was the accompaniment. And while searching for biryani, I asked why not?. So using Chapli kebabs for inspiration, I used chicken mince instead of mutton, again because of my employees. And last but not the least, my absolute favorite – Sheer Qurma/Khurma (you have to ignore the ghee floating up if you want to have any fulfillment of enjoying it) :p I obviously cant crack it like the Muslims do, but well, it was enjoyable nonetheless. P.S : And yes, I am sharing. Waiting for my boys to come home!
