For starters, it cannot be overstated that a healthy majority of those who identify as conservative Republicans also identify as evangelical Christians. While not everyone who falls into that latter category are anti-environment, there is a sort of built-in apathy to the planet in general among evangelical Republicans. Why should they care, after all, about the environment when Jesus is coming back any moment now, and that means the end of days, which means no more Earth anyway, right? Now, I seem to remember — at least in a bit of a hazy way — that there were verses in the Bible that specifically told followers to treat the planet well and to be shepherds of all God’s creation (paraphrasing I am sure), so again I’m not here to claim that all Christians behave in this way, just a certain swath of them that also happen to vote Republican.
