For stronger and healthier shoulders, do headstands (Sirsasana - tripod headstand; it needs to be well aligned, so talk to a teacher first): In a study published in the International Journal of Yoga Therapy in 2006, 10 people with rotator cuff injuries practiced headstand for 30 seconds daily for six weeks, with follow up sessions every six weeks, for 5 months. 9 out of 10 patients reported improved range of motion in the shoulders and reduced shoulder pain after the initial 30-second session. At the final follow up, 8 patients showed significantly improved rage of motion and a 75 percent reduction in pain. None went to surgery, which is unusual for people with rotator cuff injuries who report significant amount of pain. --Doug Keller
