For the Gospel does not condemn good works, since that would be to condemn and to remove the Law. Rather it upholds the law, as Paul teaches (Rom. 3:31), since it shows that way in which the Law can be satisfied and constantly urges the study of the Law and good works. It forbids one thing, putting our trust in these things for righteousness before God. For it teaches that this righteousness must be built on the crucified Son of God alone. It promises that we will be righteous before God when we embrace Him in faith, even though we are sinners before ourselves and the world. It promises that we will be powerful, even though we are infirm; wise, even though we may be foolish in the sight of the world. It commands us, then, to have faith in this crucified Son of God.
