For the Somme - the lost battallion !. They marched, they knew, what they were going to, Blood and death was their fate, But they stood tall, one and all, The `pals`, the battallion, of late. The black earth shook from the cannon`s pound, And men stood in the trenches below, And rose to the whistle, and charged on the blood reddened ground, And death reaped what a hatred did sow. They fell in their swathes some in permanent graves, Buried deep in the mud of that field, But still as they fell, they came forward in waves, Always marching, - not stopping to yield. Now most lie together in grass a covered plain, All `pals` still together in death, Each one gave his life so our nation could gain, For they loved us so much, - that they gave their last breath !.
