For the fallen heroes of Bataan, you’ll Be remembered as real heroes. Yeah, I remember, this day, one hot Summer day, we were barely 18 or 19 We too walked the trail of Mount Samat, But be not mistaken, we were not among The fallen heroes of Bataan out to surrender, Just plain mountain hikers of sort, out to have Some fun in Bataan where we spent a Holy Week. The real fall must have taken place About twenty years back then. We were idealistic And questioning lot, like most UP students then, Who even dared ask why should a fall even be Celebrated and what the hell was that war ever Fought for? As we walked that mountain trail, we were told how Many really died there, how bodies were not even buried And how they just dried in the heat of the sun, nobody to cry For them, at least not in those moments, they must have been Like forgotten heroes. Looking back, now I recall, there was really an epic battle that was Fought, a battle that was to be remembered for all time sake, And though it resulted in a fall it may seem, that fall ought to be Remembered for the sake of our countrymen whose lost their lives And for those who survived – no need to ask now why and wherefore They had to do that - just say it was an accident of history and time, As all wars must have been and perhaps will always be. A we walked that mountain trail, oh, so many summers ago, at its summit There was no monument yet glorifying that fall, good that now there’s one, And bigger and grander celebrations will be offered – really what a fall it was, dear countrymen – let’s join in on the celebration.
