The shooting of an African American youth in Ferguson, MO, and the subsequent lies and coverup, has brought out military-style firepower from the local police, and now, a mobilization of the Missouri National Guard. The violence and protests look to have reached nearly 1960s-levels. It is a truism that America cannot cover its racist past. In fact, the past continues to resurrect itself to inhabit the present. If the president cannot exert some leadership as both the head of state and an African American, then there is little hope that the Obama presidency will not be viewed as an abject failure. And if he cannot broker a truce with the community and the police in Ferguson, then who will have the influence, imagination, and courage to do so?-- mamie van doren
