For the first time, soldiers took to the air. Short sighted military leaders at first thought the airplane had little military value, except maybe for observation purposes. Maybe they can be forgiven for such a view, for at the start of the war, aeroplanes were still fairly primitive. But war accelerates development, and before too long the small kites that they originally flew grew into fairly sturdy and reliable fighters (called scouts back then). They were the F-35s of their day, and in the proper hands, quite deadly.
