For the first times this season, the West Central Louisiana - TopicsExpress

For the first times this season, the West Central Louisiana Sportsline didnt do a great job picking the games, going 6-4 last week. Of course, we didnt see West Monroe or John Curtis losing, so that hurt us. The other two games we lost were Pickering and Leesville, which were toss-ups to us, so we didnt feel too bad about that. For the season, our record is 39-11, a percentage of .780, which isnt bad, but less than our 80 percent goal. And the games we have selected for this week are hardly slam dunks, so its possible, almost probable, that we will not get back above .800 with this week. There are many fantastic matchups on the schedule, including several toss-ups, which could give us nightmares. Leesville goes to DeRidder, Pickering takes to the road against Many and East Beauregard is hosting Hamilton Christian, all very tough matchups to call. But here goes: 1. Landry-Walker (4-1) at Edna Karr (2-2): This is a matchup between two really good Class 4A schools, easily among the tops in the state. Karr is 2-2 right now and appears to be struggling, while Landry-Walker is off to a good start. This is another tough one to call, but we will go ... LANDRY-WALKER 27, Karr 20. 2. Plaquemine (5-0) at Zachary (4-1): This should be an incredible matchup between two really good football teams. Plaquemine is in the top 5 in Class 4A, while Zachary is making noise in the Class 5A polls. Plaquemine picked up a really big win over a solid Jennings team a couple of weeks ago and that really impressed us. That is why we are going with ... PLAQUEMINE 35, Zachary 31. 3. Lutcher (3-2) at St. Michael (5-0): We had absolutely no clue that St. Michael was having such a solid year as it hasnt been ranked all year. Lutcher, on the other hand, has been in the rankings, but playing a very tough schedule. Lutcher has been a solid Class 4A team for several years now and we believe St. Michaels winning streak will come to an end ... LUTCHER 25, St. Michael 22. 4. John Curtis (4-1) at St. Charles Catholic (4-1): These are two very good Class 3A programs housed in the same district. The funny thing is, they wont play each other in the playoffs as Curtis is playing in Division I, while St. Charles Catholic will stay in Division II. Regardless, we think John Curtis is going to take out its frustration on St. Charles Catholic after losing a close one to St. Augustine. Curtis will have no mercy ... JOHN CURTIS 44, St. Charles Catholic 17. 5. South Beauregard (5-0) at Westlake (1-4): We dont know what is more surprising, the fact Westlake is 1-4 or South Beauregard is 5-0. But that really doesnt matter as this is a District 4-3A matchup between two solid football teams. Although Westlake has been struggling to find the win column, the Rams are a very formidable foe. The only common opponent these two have had thus far is DeRidder. SBHS beat DeRidder, Westlake did not. That is why we pick ... SBHS 23, Westlake 16. 6. Elton (4-1, 2-0) at Merryville (1-4, 0-2): Elton, along with Hamilton Christian, has been the surprise of District 4-1A thus far, picking up a huge overtime win over Oberlin last weekend. The one name that will come out of this one here is Lemoine, Marcus Lemoine. He rushed for 335 yards last week against Oberlin and could very well do that again. Oh, and he also scored seven touchdowns in that game. Even though this one is at Keener-Cagle Stadium, we have to go with ... ELTON 41, Merryville 20. 7. Hamilton Christian (4-1, 2-0) at East Beauregard (5-0, 2-0): This should be a highly entertaining football game. Both teams have stellar defenses and solid offenses. We believe this one will be a low-scoring game, which in our opinion, favors East Beauregard. We like the Trojans in this one ... EBHS 16, Hamilton Christian 13. 8. Rosepine (0-5) at Menard (3-2): The Rosepine Eagles havent scored in the last two games, but they will buck that trend in this one as Menards defense has only had one really good game this season, that coming against Buckeye last week. Rosepine must find a way to protect the football in order to stick with Menard. But we believe Menard is just a little better ... MENARD 38, Rosepine 27. 9. Pickering (4-1) at No. 1 Many (5-0): It is extremely ironic that these two teams have the same exact record entering the first week of District 3-2A play as they did at this time a year ago. Honestly, we believe Many went into last years game at Pickering thinking they had it won, that the Red Devils wouldnt put up much of a fight. And Pickering won, 23-20. Whats going to happen this time around? Well, Many will be ready for sure and not taking this one for granted. However, this isnt the same Pickering team as a year ago. Pickering is more athletic and has a much-improved passing game, especially with the Patrick Hinson to Dontay Hargrove connection. We expect to see Carnelius Smart locked on Hargrove all night long in what will be a very entertaining matchup. As for the game itself, its either going to be a three-touchdown victory for one team or a close game. We are going with a close game ... MANY 31, Pickering 28. 10. Leesville (2-3) at DeRidder (3-2): This game will be for the District 3-4A title as neither team will lose a game in district play after this one. These are, by far, the best two teams in a very weak district. But not only is this a district game, this is also for the coveted Hooper Trophy, which has been possessed by DeRidder a little bit more over the past few years. But this game, which will be at Cecil Doyle Memorial Stadium, we expect to be a good, old-fashioned slobberknocker. DeRidder has a solid, opportunistic defense which has scored several times already this year. The Leesville defense has played well this year, especially over the last three weeks. So it will come down to the play of the offense and special teams. We think this is going to be much closer than many people are thinking with the home team pulling this one out ... DeRIDDER 21, Leesville 20. Go out and enjoy the games. Dont forget to support your favorite team!
