For the holidays as well as all year long, protect yourself and your family from identify theft! Every piece of personally identifiable information, whether it is a social security number, date of birth, home address, etc., is more than just a number. It represents a your identity, livelihood, and personal financial well-being. Unfortunately, most people do not realize their identity has been stolen until it is too late, so if you believe your identity has been compromised, here are actions you should take: 1. Order a free copy of your credit report. You are entitled to a free credit report once a year from each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies. https://annualcreditreport/index.action 2. Place a fraud alert on your credit reports. Fraud alerts help prevent thieves from opening more accounts in your name. 3. Immediately close compromised accounts. 4. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Complaints can be filed online or by calling 1-877-438-4338. 5. File a report with your local police department. Be sure to take your completed FTC complaint, also known as an FTC Affidavit, when you file your police report.
