For the last 10 days our WHOLE family, all 7.5 of us, have come - TopicsExpress

For the last 10 days our WHOLE family, all 7.5 of us, have come together in what I now realize is a cold turkey quit of numerous physical and emotional addictions. I had no idea it would be so dramatic, so different. I thought we ate a relatively healthy diet overall. But the things I have seen in the last 10 days tell a much different story. Here is my #Whole30 top ten in 10 days: 1) Doing this all together is tough in terms of meal planning and logistics, but awesome in terms of environment and support. 2) We are going through SO MUCH produce!! And wasting next to nothing. But spending less than before by not eating out or buying junk food. Hooray for farmers markets and generous friends sharing from their gardens! 3) My kids taste in food is already changing. 11 yr old discovered he loves pecans and how they are a bit sweet (he stole the bag.). 6 yr old went from spitting out mushrooms to asking for them. Ten days people! 4) Withdrawals are real, even when you are 4. But he came through like a champ and is his normal happy self again. Day 7 was rough. 5) So. Many. Diapers. Cant wait for his system to adjust. Takes time to heal the gut. But he is trying and enjoying so many things he used to spit out! 6) There isnt one thing everyone misses. We have all had a craving here and there, but they pass quickly. Especially when there is an apple or banana on the counter. 7) Way less complaining than I expected! If its not in the house tantalizing them, they really dont miss it for long. Especially when they are distracted by so many new and delicious things. I really think it helps that none of them are teenagers yet :) 8) There are so many amazing tastes, recipes and simple combinations of food I never considered. And it is getting easier and easier to make stuff that tastes and feels great (both because our taste buds are awakening and our skills are improving.) 9) I cant imagine any other way to learn as much as we have about our own bodies needs. Hunger and fullness signals went totally haywire but are starting to become clearer than ever before. 10) I use food for stress relief so much more than I knew. So much. Lots of meltdowns this week. But I am finding (and remembering) so many other, better, more permanent options. Necessity truly is the mother of invention. This is what is missing from nearly all diet plans. If you dont know what Whole30 is, check it out at whole30. No sweeteners, no dairy, no grains (my kids still eat 5 ingredient whole wheat bread), no bad oils, no legumes, no additives, etc for 30 days to reset your system, then only sparingly afterward depending on your bodys response to reintroduction. Check it out friends! Anyone else crazy enough to do this with your family? I hope so, its starting to get good here :) with Josef Cavaness
